Low Carbon

The Low Carbon Collaborate Skills Partnership (CSP) led by Leeds College of Building is a partnership with other colleges in the Leeds City Region, including Wakefield College, Bradford College, Kirklees College and Luminate Education Group. These regular meetings also welcome employers and industry bodies to help understand the low carbon industry skills needs and what provision needs to be created to fill gaps.

The Leeds City Region set to become net-zero carbon by 2038 with a strong commitment to tackle the climate emergency. It is projected that West Yorkshire will see an increase of 42,000 direct jobs by 2030, employed in the low carbon renewable energy economy and rising to 71,000 by 2050. The CSP aims to work with SMEs in the region to create or update skills provision based around the new technologies and roles that this sector will encounter.

Leeds College of Building is working with employers including Northern Gas Network (NGN) and The Institute of Apprenticeships and Technical Education (IfATE) to develop an innovative and future facing Apprenticeship Standard in Green Technologies.

The Apprenticeship Programme will require a clear progression route towards it, so the development will also include a Study Programme or Traineeship Programme, which prepares young people or adults who wish to re-train for the gas industry and specifically for low carbon alternatives to fossil fuels. The CSP is keen to continue to engage with employers in this sector, so more pilots can be developed to aid the low carbon sector.
