Leeds City College - Tour de France media project with Sky Sports

Our member Colleges have been engaged in many projects leading up to the Tour de France in Yorkshire. This news feature highlights the work Leeds City College have been involved in.

First year journalism and radio students from Leeds City College work was displayed to millions of people around the world on the Sky Sports website after taking part in a competition to highlight the effects of the Tour de France on Yorkshire.

Senior journalists and staff from Sky Sports visited the journalism department in the Technology Campus to judge the competition.

Students have spent the past few months coming up with fresh and interesting ideas, researching and writing features, making film clips, recording audio interviews and taking photographs.

Maisy Farren and Ellie Squires won the competition with their feature and filmed interview.

However, the judges were so impressed with the innovative work the students created that they will include everyone’s work in a feature on their website.

Maisy and Ellie will work alongside production staff at the Sky newsroom in Wellington Street, Leeds to edit and upload the feature on July 4.

“I am immensely proud of all the students who took part in the competition,” said Curriculum Leader Sarah Robinson. “They all worked hard to find new and innovative angles on the Grand Depart and gave impressive and professional presentations to the Sky team. The project gave them a real insight into the world of journalism.”

The partnership project with Sky has been organised by Leeds City College Assistant Principal (Progression and Employability) Phil Blake through Ahead Partnerships, a social enterprise that works with the public and private sectors to foster social and economic regeneration.
